How to connect to a wireless display

To connect to a wireless display in Windows 10:

  1. Turn on your wireless display or adapter.
  2. Press the “Windows+K” keyboard shortcut to open the Connect pane.
  3. Look for your display in the Connect pane; it may take a few moments to appear.
  4. Tap the name of your display to connect.
  5. When you’re finished with the connection, reopen the Connect pane and press the “Disconnect” button.

Applies to All Windows 10 Versions

Wireless display technology has evolved considerably over the past few years and it’s now seeing more widespread use. Whether you’re casting your screen or connecting to a board room projector, Windows’ built-in wireless display support makes it much simpler to temporarily add a second monitor. The days of fumbling around with cables and adapters are fading away.

Getting connected isn’t tricky but may not be the most intuitive procedure. The steps are the same irrespective of what you’re connecting to, whether it’s a projector, another Windows PC or a wireless display adapter.

The quickest way to connect is using a keyboard shortcut. Press Win+K to open Windows 10’s Connect panel, which will appear as a flyout to the right of your screen. Alternatively, you can click the “Connect” quick settings tile in Action Center (pictured above) to launch this flyout.

The Connect pane lets you connect to a variety of wireless devices, including audio receivers, accessories and Bluetooth products. Most importantly for us, it will detect wireless display receivers, such as Miracast display adapters. To make sure every possible device shows up, you may need to enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth – you can use Action Center’s tiles to do this. Cheap way to get microsoft office for mac.

Make sure the device you want to connect to is turned on and then look for it in the Connect pane. After a few seconds, it should show up in the list and you’ll be able to tap it to connect. At this stage, you may need to follow any instructions which appear on the device you’re connecting to.

Generally, Windows will take a moment to initiate the connection, before the device gets activated as an additional display. You’ll then see it show up as “Connected” in the Connect pane.

The “Change projection mode” link lets you choose how the wireless display is used. By default, it will be in “Duplicate” mode, which mirrors your display onto the wireless screen. This is ideal for most projection and casting scenarios.

You can choose to use the display as a second monitor with the “Extend” option. Alternatively, you can use just your primary or wireless display, with the other one displayed.

When you’re ready to disconnect from the wireless display, you can return to the Connect pane with Win+K. When you tap your connected device’s name, you’ll see a “Disconnect” button. Press it to end the session and revert your desktop to its previous display settings.

How To Cast To Xbox One

Gaming on a Mac is not what Apple is historically known for. However, with Apple delving into the fledgling virtual and augmented reality space, some traditional game interfaces and not so traditional interfaces (think HTC wands or Valve's knuckle controllers) now need to be supported on macOS to reap the VR/AR benefits to their fullest.

To ready you for some amazing VR pilot games such as Eve: Valkyrie that utilize a traditional game Xbox game controller, we're here to show you how to connect one to your Mac! In the past this method only applied to the Xbox 360 controller, but the latest version of the software you'll be using also now supports the Xbox One controller.

How to download and install the drivers

We're assuming that you already own a wired Xbox controller, but if you're needing to buy, a standard controller is about $50. You'll need to connect it to your Mac using a microUSB cable which, sadly, isn't included. If you buy a third-party wired controller you won't have to worry about this.

Final thoughts

I am super stoked about developers climbing aboard the VR/AR hype train. As a mere consumer of VR, I can only hope for more and more creative minds to get on board. If you're a VR/AR developer, or even better yet, a macOS VR/AR developer, what other ways can Apple help promote virtual reality on their platform? Let us know in the comments!

Bring a little bit of sparkle to your wrist, but not too much, with this colorful genuine leather Apple Watch band.

Rivet is a tiny piece of Mac software that will help you stream video, music and photos to an Xbox 360. Many people have their iTunes library of music and movies on their MacBook which can’t stream to the Xbox 360 by default. Following this simple guide, you can take that library on the road with you to a friend’s house and stream it to their Xbox 360 and then bring it home and do the same with yours.

We just purchased an Xbox 360 and figured it was impossible to view videos saved in iTunes on the new entertainment console. But thankfully we found Rivet. This tiny program, which only costs $20, will do the job very simply. In fact it was as easy as downloading, installing, configuring and turning on the Xbox 360. The Little App Factory offers a free trial that lets you stream 25 movies or songs before paying.

One you get Rivet loaded on your MacBook, it places an icon in the menu bar. That icon also serves as the menu for the app. Click it to view the options. You can check to share or not share your movies, music and photos through the application. The preferences dialog box will also let you choose what to stream, set settings for each media type, and to change network settings. There isn’t much to change to get it to work. Rivet is also supposed to work with the PS3 console, but we haven’t tested that.

After setting up the software, turn on your Xbox 360. From the Xbox menu go to the My Xbox item and choose any of the three kinds of libraries. We first tested the Video Library playing the great Civil War film God’s and Generals. It worked Flawlessly. It does not stream video downloaded from iTunes. It works well on movies that you create or that you rip from your own DVDs.

Songs are grouped much like they are in iTunes. You can play music categorized by artist, genre, and via your iTunes playlists. The sound is excellent. It won’t stream DRM infested music.

We had trouble with our pictures. It will stream pictures into slideshows from iPhoto, Aperture or just your picture folders. We set it up to show iPhoto library pictures. A couple of our iPhoto sets would not stream, but when we went into the photos item and streamed our pictures that way, it worked well. The slideshow quality is as good as your picture quality. It gives a kind of Ken Burns panning effect. The program can also stream pictures from Aperture and your Photos folders. You can add other folders via the settings box of the program’s menu on your Mac.

Streaming God's and Generals movie on the Xbox 360

This is the simplest way to get iTunes content onto your Xbox. The software transcodes the video and audio to be viewable on the Xbox if needed. The quality of the streams is as if you were watching it on any other Apple approved device like the Apple TV. We were very pleased and happy to pay the $20 to get this to work. The only disappointment was that it doesn’t work with movies downloaded from the iTunes store. However, DVDs backed up using Handbrake and imported into iTunes worked fine.

Pros:

  • Easy to set up
  • Stream quality is great
  • No streaming hiccups
  • Worked on all content with no DRM

Cons:

  • Won’t stream copy protected content downloaded from iTunes store
